Week 4/5. DIY Natural Products
As many of you know I love making my own products to use at home. There are many reasons why I have decided to make my own items. I am sure that you know the obvious like saving money and well for being "natural" but by natural what do I really mean? Before we get started let me add that I am NOT against store bought products. I can promise you that I have a bottle of store bought dish soap right now at my sink. I will continue to buy store bought products but only certain things and at certain times. I mean after all who doesn't want to use a good coupon when they have the chance?
Have you ever read the ingredients in items that you buy. There are so many added things to store bought products. For example in dish washing soap when you make it all natural from home there are no bubbles that come along with it. Trust me it takes some getting use to but over time you know the right amount to use without "looking for the bubbles." The thing that make soap bubble is one of those added ingredients.
I would like to share this website with you. I think many of you will find it very interesting but scary at the same time. Click Here
I could go on and on about harmful products found in all these products but if you feel that this is something that you would like to try then i strongly believe that you should look into it and do some research for yourselves. I guess after all whatever doesn't kill us only makes us stronger.
Let's talk about the DIY things that I have in my laundry room right now. I have laundry detergent. My favorite DIY green product and the most money saving. I paid roughly 12.00-15.00 for all the ingredients it takes to make laundry detergent. This will last me for the next 4 to 6 months. You do the math. 15.00 is the price for one small container of detergent in the grocery store. That might last us 2 or 3 weeks. (As I'm referring to the liquid). I decided on the powder because it just seems easier to store and less messy. You only need one to two TABLESPOONS of powder per load depending on how dirty the load is. There is also DIY oxy clean for those with really dirty laundry or just simple kids who like to have fun. I have fabric softener and reusable dryer sheets. For the fabric softener you put 1/3 cup in at the start of each rinse cycle. You have to be sure and shake it well each time before use because it seems to settle in the bottom. The dryer sheets are so simple to make and use. After 12-15 times it will be time to re-soak them. Fabric softener and dryer sheets are strictly for hard water and static clean, not for the scent of your clothes. Natural essential oil will do the job for scent when making DIY projects that tons of chemicals do for store products. The plus with essential oils is you get to choose how strong or not to make your clothes/soap/cleaners smell. You don't have to use it at all which is great for allergies and sensitive skin. Right now I also have Shower cleaner. Stored in a spray bottle you spray your shower and let it sit for 2 hours. After the two hours is up you simply wipe it up. It is as simple as that. No harsh chemicals or ingredients that you or your little ones will be surrounded by during bath/shower time. The last thing that I currently have in my laundry room is disinfectant. Great for the winter months or just when you feel like cleaning the house!
I will be making carpet cleaner (only a small amount because thank God our new house in NC has hard wood floors) next to try it out and also carpet powder. You know the stuff that you sprinkle all over the house before vacuuming it up. I am just waiting for the Parmesan cheese container to become empty being that is the perfect storage for it.
I could go on and on about DIY products and about the harsh hidden ingredients in store bought products but if you are interested you should do some research yourself. Google is a perfect way to start. There are tons and tons of DIY websites our there. You just have to find the recipe that fits your family's needs. Everyone has their own decision and opinion and I respect that. Steve and I have just done what we feel (after a lot of research) is best for our family.
For any perfectionist that noticed that I have softener spelled wrong. I have fixed it since I took the picture(;

Just a quick note about us. Steve and I are doing great. We got lots of snow here last night and on Monday it was 73. Kansas weather is something else, that's for sure. We are counting down the days until we move home!
Shenay.
